Rockfish Shootout at Coltons Point Marina

It all started with a rowdy group at the Captain?s meeting on a warm evening in May. The Captain?s and many of their teammates picked up their shirts, boat numbers and had a few beers while they reviewed the rules of the tournament with Mark , Adam and our officiating volunteer Ronny Mattingly. Good stories were told as old and new friends conversed until Teeny closed the place down with stories of the bathtub races.

The second annual Rockfish Shootout was successfully completed the weekend of May 14th. Saturday and Sunday about half the teams on each day were able to catch fish that fit the criteria set by the Department of Natural Resources. The overall winner, with a combined weight of 60.7lbs of Rockfish, was Team Trophy, Captained by Wayne Pilkerton. We had a few teen entries including Morgan Long winning the $100 teen prize with a fish that weighed in at 12.1lbs.

On Saturday night the teams and a few friends were treated to dinner and a live band under a tent at the marina. The proceeds of the event, approximately $1000.00, were donated to the Seventh District Optimist Club. We would like to give special thanks to Ronny Mattingly, Bob Kopel, and Mike Barbour for volunteering their time and expertise to the event. We also would like to thank Kevin Poole and Gilbert Murphy for not only helping us establish the event at the marina, but entrusting us to do so. We hope that everyone involved had a good time and will join us next year for the third annual Rockfish Shootout. The link below will give you all of the results on the 2010 event.
